Born on February 1, 1987, in Riverside, California, Ronda Jean Rousey is the youngest of three daughters. Her parents are AnnMaria De Mars and Ronald John Rousey. AnnMaria De Mars, her mother, was a skilled judoka and the first American to win a World Judo Championship in 1984. Ronda Rousey's family background includes English, Polish, Trinidadian, Venezuelan, and Canadian ancestry.
When Rousey was eight, her biological father passed away by suicide after a sledging accident that resulted in a broken back. As she grew up, her mother pursued a PhD in educational psychology at the University of California, Riverside.
For the first six years of her life, Rousey faced a speech disorder called apraxia, which made it difficult for her to speak clearly. This was due to being born with her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. Rousey's impressive career began when she started judo at the age of 11, training alongside her mother. She continued her judo journey, even qualifying for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens at just 17 years old. She also won a gold medal at the 2004 World Judo Juniors Championships.
In 2006, Rousey made history by becoming the first female U.S. judoka in nearly a decade to win an A-Level tournament, securing gold at the Birmingham World Cup.
