Education

Channing attended the Madeira School in McLean, Virginia, a girls' boarding school, after initially starting at the Chapin School in New York City. She pursued her higher education at Radcliffe College of Harvard University, where she majored in history and literature and graduated summa cum laude in 1965. Her acting training took place at HB Studio in New York City.

Parents and Family

Stockard Channing's parents were Mary Alice (née English) and Lester Napier Stockard, who was involved in the shipping business. She also had an elder sister named Lesly Stockard Smith, who later became the mayor of Palm Beach, Florida.

Career

Channing began her acting career with the experimental Theatre Company of Boston and performed in various productions, including the 1969 Off-Broadway play Adaptation/Next by Elaine May. Her Broadway debut came in 1971 when she appeared in Two Gentlemen of Verona — The Musical and later in No Hard Feelings in 1973 at the Martin Beck Theatre.

She made her television debut on Sesame Street and gained recognition for her role in the 1973 television movie The Girl Most Likely To... Following this, she co-starred with Warren Beatty and Jack Nicholson in The Fortune (1975).

Channing's breakthrough in film came with her portrayal of Betty Rizzo in the musical Grease (1978), which earned her the People's Choice Award for Favorite Motion Picture Supporting Actress.
