Born in Portsmouth in 1812, Dickens had a difficult childhood and left school at the age of 12 to work in a boot-blacking factory when his father was imprisoned in a debtors' prison. He later returned to school before beginning his career as a journalist.

Over the course of his life, Dickens wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, edited a weekly journal for 20 years, lectured and performed readings extensively, and campaigned vigorously for social reforms, particularly in the areas of children's rights and education.

Dickens's literary success began with the 1836 serial publication of The Pickwick Papers, which introduced the character Sam Weller and became a publishing phenomenon, sparking merchandise and spin-offs. Within a few years, Dickens had become an international literary celebrity known for his humor, satire, and keen observation of character and society. His novels, many of which were published in monthly or weekly installments, pioneered the serial publication of narrative fiction and often ended with cliffhangers to keep readers in suspense. This format allowed Dickens to evaluate his audience's reaction and modify his plot and character development accordingly.

Dickens's works continue to be widely read and adapted today, particularly his 1843 novella A Christmas Carol, his novels Oliver Twist and Great Expectations, and his historical fiction masterpiece A Tale of Two Cities. Dickens's public reading tours in the later part of his career were hugely popular, and the term "Dickensian" is still used to describe social or working conditions reminiscent of his writings or his comically repulsive characters.
