Initially, while still enrolled at the University of Southern California, Benjamin signed with Columbia Records. However, Columbia Records ended their partnership with him just a few weeks after he submitted his album. Even though his partnership with Columbia Records was terminated, Benjamin continued his music career by self-funding a tour in Europe where he opened for Marina Kaye in France and Lea in Germany. To promote his music, he performed in parking lots outside concert venues and distributed business cards to passersby.

On November 16, 2018, Benjamin released his mixtape Narrated for You which featured popular songs like Water Fountain, Outrunning Karma, and Let Me Down Slowly. The latter was later re-released as a single with Alessia Cara. During the promotion of his mixtape, he also created Can I Sing for You? videos on YouTube where he performed his written songs acoustically to people in public.
