De Grasse's journey began in Markham, Ontario, where he attended St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic Elementary School up to grade two. He later transferred to Mother Teresa Catholic School in Markham, where he continued his education up to the eighth grade, achieving his first race win in 2006. However, it was during a high school track race, the York Region Championships, that his true potential shone through.
Despite running in basketball shorts with borrowed spikes and ignoring the starting blocks, he secured a second-place finish in the 100m, a third-place overall in the 200m, and a seventh-place overall in the Long Jump.
Coach Tony Sharpe noticed his talent and invited him to join Pickering's Speed Academy. De Grasse continued to improve, ultimately qualifying for the Ontario Championships in the 100m, where he secured fifth place in the final. He then began training under Sharpe at The Speed Academy.
In the 2013 Canada Games, De Grasse impressed by winning three gold medals in the 100m, 200m, and the 4x100 relay.
