Ivan Parker grew up in Sanford, North Carolina, where his father served as a Pentecostal church minister. Parker started singing with the Singing Americans in 1982. In 1983, he joined the Gold City Quartet, a group that won a Dove Award, as its lead vocalist. During his time with Gold City, he was recognized by Singing News as the Best Lead Vocalist from 1988 to 1993 and as the Best Male Vocalist from 1989 to 1995 and 1997. In 1993, he was admitted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.
Parker started making solo albums in January 1994, and he went on the Homecoming tour with Bill and Gloria Gaither in 1995. For sixteen years, he kept on touring with the Gaithers.
He occasionally performed as part of a trio known as The Trio, which also included baritone/pianist Anthony Burger and tenor Kirk Talley. He was named Favorite Soloist by The Singing News in 2001–2004 and again in 2006–2016. He won the Singing News Fan Awards for Male Vocalist of the Year in both 2007 and 2008.
