He was born in Michigan in May 1969, and comes from a talented family of creatives, including his brother, Matthew Michael Carnahan, who is a screenwriter, and his sister, Leah Carnahan, who is a producer.

Carnahan has an impressive list of writing and directing credits to his name. He wrote the screenplay for the 1995 film Karate Writer and also wrote the 1998 short film Taco Heaven.
