Joseph William Calzaghe CBE, a former Welsh professional boxer, had a successful career from 1993 to 2008. He won multiple world championships in two weight categories, including unified and lineal titles at super-middleweight, and also the Ring magazine light-heavyweight title.
Calzaghe's remarkable feat of holding the World Boxing Organization (WBO) title for over a decade and defending it against 20 opponents, makes him the longest-reigning super-middleweight world champion in boxing history. He moved up to the light-heavyweight category during this reign. He retired with the longest continual time as world champion of any active boxer at the time.
Calzaghe achieved a few notable records during his career, such as being the first boxer to unify three of the four major world titles (World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council, and WBO) at super-middleweight. He was also the inaugural Ring champion in the super-middleweight category. Between 2006 and 2008, The Ring ranked him as one of the world's top ten active boxers, pound for pound. He retired in February 2009 with an undefeated record of 46 wins and as a reigning world champion.
As of 2022, BoxRec ranks Calzaghe as the twenty-fourth greatest fighter of all time, pound for pound, and the second-greatest European boxer of all time. In 2007, he won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award, becoming the first Welsh recipient since David Broome in 1960. In 2014, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. He was popularly known as the "Pride of Wales" and the "Italian Dragon".
