Sara Dallin Biography

Sara Elizabeth Dallin, born on 17 December 1961, is an accomplished English singer and one of the founding members of the renowned pop group Bananarama.

With a string of hits under their belt, the group has achieved remarkable success, including 28 top 50 singles in the UK and 11 top 100 singles in the US. Notably, their song Venus (1986) even reached number one on the US charts. Other popular tracks include Cruel Summer (1983), I Heard a Rumour (1987), and Love in the First Degree (1987).

Dallin and her bandmate, Keren Woodward, hold the distinction of being the only performers to appear on both the 1984 and 1989 Band Aid versions of the iconic song Do They Know It's Christmas? Additionally, Bananarama has sold over 30 million records, and their impressive achievements have earned them a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. They currently hold the record for the most UK chart entries by an all-female group.

In her early years, Dallin pursued journalism studies at the London College of Fashion, a part of the University of Arts, from 1980 to 1981. It was during this time that she formed Bananarama with her childhood friend Keren Woodward and Siobhan Fahey, whom she met while attending college.

In 1980, Dallin and Woodward crossed paths with Paul Cook, a former member of the Sex Pistols, at a club, and they quickly developed a close friendship.

They had the opportunity to contribute backing vocals for Cook and Steve Jones' new band, The Professionals, which provided them with their initial taste of the music industry as they recorded demos in Denmark Street.

When the house they were residing in underwent renovations, Paul offered them a place to live in what had previously been the office of renowned band manager Malcolm McLaren, located above the Sex Pistols' former rehearsal space in Denmark Street. Late into the night, after returning from clubbing, Dallin and Woodward would plug in their guitars and engage in spontaneous jam sessions.

Dallin's first appearance on stage alongside Woodward and their friend Mel O'Brien took place at the Camden Palace (now known as Koko), where they performed with Vaughn Toulouse's band, Department S.

The trio, along with Siobhan Fahey, made their debut (as what would eventually become Bananarama) with the Monochrome Set (friends of Siobhan) at the Rainbow Theatre, opening for Iggy Pop.

Subsequently, they began rehearsing with their musician friends and recorded their first demo, titled Aie A Mwana. This demo garnered attention when they performed it at various London clubs, including Colonel Barefoot's Rock Garden, The Embassy, and The Wag Club.

Their talent and potential were noticed by Demon Records, leading to a one-off singles deal, and the release of “Aie A Mwana.”

The track received airplay from the esteemed BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, known for his support of emerging artists.

Terry Hall, formerly of the Specials, happened to hear the song and purchased a copy. He then came across a photo of Bananarama in a magazine called The Face, often regarded as a style authority. Intrigued, he contacted them and asked if they would be interested in lending their vocals to several tracks on his new project, Fun Boy Three.

The resulting collaboration, It Ain't What You Do (It's The Way That You Do It), became a top-five hit, catapulting Bananarama into the spotlight.
